Literature Text

Tohya stopped at the stairs from the night before, answering his cell phone ring. “Yeah?” He blinked, “Oh, hi… N-no… I was busy…” He sighed, hanging his head, “Yes, yes… Fire me. Yes. Really.” He smiled, looking at the base of the stairs, “It’s time I get back to my real job. See you.” He flipped his thin phone shut.

“I found you, Aidene.” Came a muffled voice to Rain’s ears. “Aidene? Aidene? Can you hear me?”

Slowly Rain opened his golden eyes. He was looking up at Tohya and Joe’s faces. “Where…?”

“The back of the bar,” Joe answered, leaning back. “Are you okay now?”

“Yeah.” Rain sat up, rubbing his red hair. “What a headache.”

“That’s what you get for claiming you have amnesia.” Tohya snickered. Rain glared at him. “Don’t try to hide it. We know you’re Aidene Redwood.” Tohya held up the bloodstained violin gently by its neck.

“We found it in your belongings,” Joe said, crossing his arms. “Tohya went to see your manager and he confessed to everything between you two.”

Rain kicked off the covers, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed. “So what? You’re going to turn me over to the authorities for murder?”

“We could,” Joe answered with a nod.

“But we won’t,” Tohya answered.

Joe rubbed his forehead, “Oh, no… Tohya, I told you. You can’t live with him. He’s dirt poor and-”

“Shut up!” Tohya glared to him. “He can live with me.”

“Where?” Joe asked, his eyes lowered. He expected some stupid reply. “You only come to my place when you’re about to be kicked out. Erin dump you that fast?”

Tohya batted his arm at Joe. “Oh shut up! I can find a place to live! My father’s still got that condo over on Lakewood Street.”

Rain rolled his eyes, snatching back his violin. “I appreciate the offer, but I decline.”

“What? Why?” Tohya looked to him. “Where’ll you go then?”

“Away from a player,” Rain answered. “Besides,” he knelt down, putting the violin back into its case. “I’m not too up on living with someone who says I have no talent.”

“No talent at the piano,” Tohya waved his finger correcting the red head. “I never said you had no talent at the violin.”

“You’ve never heard me play.”

“Yes I have.”

Rain blinked, staring at him. “You… When?”

“That last concert, with that music that had no sheet to it.” Tohya smirked. “I knew it was you as soon as you played that on the piano, Aidene.”

Rain slapped Tohya with his free hand. “I told you! Aidene’s dead!”

Tohya coughed, rubbing his cheek. He and Joe watched silently as Rain stood up past them, and with his violin left the room.

“Smooth going there, Shirou.”

Tohya rolled his eyes, “Don’t call me that.”

Joe shrugged, “Right, right. Your onmyoji name is Tohya- the living steel.”

Tohya glared over at Joe, knowing that that hadn’t been a compliment. “Anyway,” he stood up, “I’m going after him.”

“Why?” Joe crossed his arms behind his head. “He obviously wants to be left alone.”

“I can see the darkness around his spirit,” Tohya answered.

Joe watched Tohya leave. He sighed enviously. “Ah, the life of a onmyoji- to protect all those with malicious hauntings.”
