Title: Host's Chocolate
=====================

Mei returned to his apartment. He bowed a bit to the woman across the hall, then went into his own. He sighed sadly, and started packing up some stuff that he actually cared about.

“I don’t know what to do with you, Snowy,” Mei frowned at the rabbit.

After he had his belongings stuffed into a duffle bag, Mei carefully put Snowy into his cage.

“Sorry if it’s uncomfortable,” Mei said to the rabbit. It made no response to show if it was comfortable or not.

Mei pulled on his jacket, slung the duffle over his shoulders and then picked up the cage. Without a word to anyone, he left the apartment complex, and went down the street. He stopped at the pet shop, looking in at the animals in cages behind the glass.

“Thought I’d find you here.”

Mei looked to his side, seeing Yao walk up. “Uhm… Hello.”

Yao nodded to him, “You want me to take care of your rabbit, right?”

Mei tightened his grip on the cage’s bars, mumbling something incoherent.

“Sorry?” Yao tilted his head smiling.

“I want you to take care of me, too,” Mei mumbled a bit louder. He slowly aimed his blue eyes at Yao, who was still just smiling.

“All right, let’s go.” Yao moved to take the cage from Mei, who just pulled it back toward his body. “Okay… Uhm, it’s this way.”

Yao let Mei into his apartment after the five minute walk there.

“Where can I set him up?” Mei asked, watching Yao close and lock the door.

“Anywhere I guess.” Yao shrugged, taking off his white beanie and ruffled his hair a bit. “There’s only one bedroom, but we can share.”

Yao led Mei through the condo. There was a nicely sized kitchen attached to a living room that doubled as a dining room. Up the small flight of metal stairs to the half-loft area was the bedroom, just a roll-out futon and a desk. Under the stairs in the wall was the bathroom, clearly the gem of the place: with it’s fine luxurious bath filling up almost half of the bathroom. Aside from the tub, the toilet and sink were pretty average. Downstairs was very wide and spacious, painted and colored all of the rainbow. After the sofa, there were two glass sliding doors that opened out onto a very tiny balcony with some plants on it.

“So, it’s okay, right?” Yao asked, hanging his hat onto a coat stand. “It’s not so fancy but…”

“No, it’s very fancy,” Mei interrupted as he gently put Snowy’s cage down next to the sofa, but on the side opposite of the glass doors. “Is it okay if I let him out?”

“Sure,” Yao shrugged. He picked up Mei’s bag, gently storing it into a closet that held all of Yao’s clothes. “It might be a bit tight here with two people, but I’ll buy a dresser.”

“Oh, no,” Mei shook his head. “I doubt I’ll be here that long!”

Yao chuckled, sitting next to Mei on the floor. “You never know.”

“Well, please don’t buy it for my sake.” Mei smiled a bit.

The two were quiet as Mei opened the cage, and they watched as Snowy carefully looked around his new surroundings. All Yao complained about was having the rabbit go up the stairs, and potentially hurt himself getting back down. So the two set up a small perimeter of boxes at the base of the stairs that Snowy couldn’t get over.

“When’d you get him?”

“A while ago,” Mei shrugged. “He’s been with me through a lot.”

“Uhm,” Yao shifted back to lean on his hands. They were still both sitting on the floor, again watching Snowy look about. “Is your hair color natural?”

“Yeah,” Mei gave a small nod. “Unsightly, right?”

“No, it’s fine,” Yao shrugged. “I’ve met people with… worse shades during my work.”

“Host-For-Hire, right?”

“That’s Lovely Escorté.” Yao corrected with a chuckle. “But, yeah… Host-For-Hire.” He smiled, watching Snowy. “You meet a lot of interesting people. Some who just need company to a party, or those that are trying to make their lover jealous. There’s also those looking for a good time, one-night-stands, or just hate being alone.”

Mei shrugged, “Sounds like you’re lonely really.”

Yao laughed, “You got that right. I’m lonely even though I have so many people around me. Odd right?”

“Not really.” Mei shook his head. Slowly, Yao looked at him. “Because, the more people you’re with for shorter times, the less you know them.”

“Yeah…” Yao nodded. He got up after a few minutes and went into the kitchen. He came back a few minutes later with a small chocolate bar, nibbling on it. As he sat back down, he made a verbal note of Mei’s sudden behavior change. “Why… are you sitting so close?”

“That’s chocolate, right?” Mei asked.

“Yeah…”

“Can… Can I have some, please?”

Yao stared at Mei’s begging face. He wasn’t like a child begging for candy who wouldn’t savor the taste. He actually looked like he was - a young adult honestly wanting a piece of the chocolate to savor the taste of it for as long as possible.

“Here.” Yao broke off a piece and handed it to Mei. He watched with a smile as the other ate it. “Good?”

“Mm-hmm,” Mei smiled to him.
