Chapter Twenty-Seven

Zalair chuckled to himself as he walked down the halls. He'd finished talking with his father about Enmu's sudden arrival, and told him to send word to Gaea about their missing prince. Afterward, Enmu was given a guest room near Keigo's and left to rest.

Zalair stopped once again, looking down to the throne room. A glare sat on his face for a moment.

"Child of a goddess? Bullshit." He grumbled, walking on to his bedroom.

The next two days were quiet around the palace.

Zalair'd walk around uninterested and aloof, like he always did. Enmu would challenge the soldiers to sword fights, to refresh his mind on how to fight with his sword. And Keigo spent the time cooped up in his guest room.

None of them really wanted to talk to each other.

That night, a gentle rain fell.

Zalair sat himself in his room, rubbing his fingers over the ruby at his right hand.

"Corvus… The first knight of ten…" he mumbled to himself, "…What does it mean?"

Keigo was sitting at the window watching the rain fall. He glanced to his bed, seeing a gentle blue glow coming from it. Cautiously, he went to investigate. There on his bed sat a perfect sapphire gem, glowing like the sea.

He picked it up slowly, inspecting it. "This looks sort of like Zalair's…"

Enmu returned to his guest room exhausted. After closing the door, he looked to the light on his bed. Gently sitting his sword against a chair, he went to see. A green emerald was the source of the glowing light.

"What the…?"

The next morning, the three sat quietly in the grand banquet hall eating while Zalair's family ate next door in the dining hall.

"Did you get one?" Keigo asked, putting his sapphire onto the table.

Enmu nodded, resting his emerald next to his cup. "What are they for?"

"They're spirits," Zalair explained after inspecting both stones. "Just like mine."

"Really?" Keigo raised a brow, "But why do we have them?"

Zalair shrugged, "Who knows. A brainless idiot like you couldn't possible need it for anything good."

Keigo glared, feeling hit below the belt. "Just how long do you plan on hating me for? I've been nice to you!"

"Oh yeah," Zalair chuckled sarcastically. "Trying to kill me is a real good way to show your genuine kindness to your fiancée."

Enmu shook his head, trying to ignore their fighting. "So, what are they for, Zalair?"

"Probably like mine," Zalair looked to him. "I'm pretty sure Corvus came from that one in my hand."

"So, why do we have them also?" Keigo asked.

"Must be some form of protection." Enmu answered.

Zalair leaned back starting to think. "Yeah… But from what? And who gave them?"

The room was silent as they tried to think of an answer.

"The princess?" Keigo asked.

"Of the North?" Zalair raised a brow. "Really, Keigo. I know you don't like her, but to call her evil in this sense is just low."

Keigo slammed his fist against the table. "I'm serious! She's a pretty mean brat!"

"She could be evil," Enmu nodded.

"See, Enmu hears me out!"

He shook his head, "That's not what I meant. Perhaps, if we're the descendants of gods, then she is a descendant also?"

Zalair rubbed his forehead, trying to listen to their stupid banter. "Humoring you… What makes you think that?"

"Her eyes." Enmu answered. "One's almost pure black, and the other's so blue it's nearly white."

"And her hair's really light blond," Keigo nodded.

"She might have a marking of a god on her also."

"But there're only three goddesses," Zalair pointed out. He wasn't sure why he was still listening to this.

Enmu crossed his arms, putting his hand to his chin to think. "Wasn't there a fourth?"

"Fourth?" Zalair looked up.

"Yeah." Enmu nodded. "Originally. Doesn't the story of Creation say there're four goddesses?"

"That's 'Four Horsemen'." Zalair corrected.

Keigo stood up, "Wait, I think you're right, Enmu! Isn't there a white, black, red and green one?"

"So?" Zalair raised a brow.

Enmu nodded, "Yes. We have red and green stones here. And the blue could be considered black."

"So the white's in that princess's hands!"

Zalair rolled his eyes, "Oh boy… I'm listening to a couple of theorists all of a sudden."

Keigo glared to Zalair, then looked back to Enmu. "Doesn't she always carry some crystal or diamond with her?"

"Her pendant?" Zalair asked dully.

"Yeah, that." Keigo nodded. "What if that's the white stone?"

"Then she'd be the terror." Enmu answered.

Zalair slid back into his chair. "Guys… Really, the Four Horsemen were the bad guys coming at the end of the world. Not three good and one bad. You're mixed up."

Keigo shook his head, "Yeah, the Four Horsemen are bad. But we're talking about the Four Goddesses of Life."

"Yes." Enmu nodded with him, explaining. "The Four Goddesses, under the command of the highest god, created our planet. Then they descended to it's core and created all that we know."

"The land, the seas, the skies, the plants and animals," Keigo continued.

"And the last of the four created all the emotions of the world," Zalair mumbled bored. "The 'Pandora' of the bunch."

"Yeah." Keigo nodded. "Then they left back to the heavens, each leaving a mark of theirs in the lands they loved most."

Enmu nodded, "Yes, yes."

Zalair groaned, "Look, you two." He shifted up, "What're you getting at exactly? I don't need a history lesson. I need information about why this is at all important."

"Because," Enmu pointed to him, "That wall in the garden."

"What wall?" Keigo blinked.

"The one with the three goddesses on it," Enmu continued, ignoring Keigo. "Under the vines on the side you could see one goddess scratched out. Like she'd done something terrible."

"Your point being?"

"What wall?" Keigo asked again louder.

Enmu picked up his emerald. "What if the Four Goddesses got into a female spat?"

"Are you saying that they'd send down their warriors to fight on this planet?" Zalair leaned forward, getting slightly interested.

"Yes." Enmu nodded. "It was told in Gaea that the goddesses were able to express their emotions more freely thanks to the white one. But they were angry at her for releasing those emotions onto the planet, and dragged her back to the heavens."

Zalair scratched his head, "…We're all almost the same age, too." He blinked, looking to Enmu. "Are you saying that…"

"We're the goddesses warriors." Enmu nodded sternly.

Keigo shifted between the two's intense stare. "Yeah, hi, I was just wondering: what wall?!"

Zalair leaned back, "Oh brother."

Enmu laughed, "I'll show you." He looked past him to Zalair. "So, what do you think?"

Zalair sighed, refusing to look at the two. "I'll have to read about it to be sure, but it does sound like we're somehow connected to the goddesses… But I want to know if so, and why."

Enmu got up and took Keigo to the wall in the children's garden to show and explain to him about the markings. Zalair left to the astrological study, starting to read up on the goddesses.
