Chapter Thirty-Two

Slowly, Enmu looked back to Keigo. "Just what happened that day?"

Keigo shrugged, rubbing his stomach. "It was like every summer. It was time for Zalair to go home and he didn't want to. I promised him I'd marry him and be monogamous. We had a disappointing child-like kiss, and then he left."

"And then?" Enmu raised a brow.

"And then," Keigo grimaced, shrugging a bit. "Afrat showed up in his dark smoke. He said something in a strange language, like a spell or some shit, then all I could feel was hate and anger at Zalair."

"What happened?" Enmu rested his sword's tip onto the floor.

Again Keigo shrugged. "Well, I flat out ignored Zalair. I wanted nothing to do with him. I thought if I was around him he'd hurt me, and he never came back to visit again. It made me lonely, and pretty mad." He paused, "I guess that's when Afrat began to mess with my head more. He made me hate Zalair."

"What made you stop?" Enmu asked.

Keigo chuckled, "A bit ago, at the welcoming party, he and I talked about my people. They were all smiling and having fun. He asked me if I wanted to keep them smiling." Keigo looked to Enmu with a slight smile. "I guess that little tiny bit broke through to me. I couldn't feel the hate in me as much any more. I still wanted to attack him, but I no longer had the drive to actually kill him."

Enmu looked to the doorway where Zalair had disappeared to. "I'd say he wants to kill you now."

Keigo stretched, grimacing in pain for a second. "Yeah well… I'm sure he's pretty confused."

"What will you do now?"

"Go talk to Aleon." Keigo nodded. "I have to explain to her about the wedding misunderstanding and junk."

"Think she'll take it lightly?" Enmu smiled a bit.

"She might," Keigo shrugged. "But I dunno… She was rather snobby last I saw her."

"She's always been snobby, Keigo."

"Yeah, but, like…" Keigo looked to him. "Snobby beyond even a spoiled bratty princess snobby."

Enmu crossed his arms, thinking a bit. "Well, I guess I can read into it. I'll see about Afrat and all that. There might be some records of it in the books here."

"Great," Keigo nodded, patting his shoulder. "Try and calm down Zalair for me?"

"That's like asking for me to die."

Keigo nodded a bit, "Yeah, but, please?"

Enmu waved, watching Keigo return to his carriage. He got in and headed north, to a snowier region. With a long sigh, Enmu left to the library.

He paused at the doorway, seeing Zalair sitting there reading a book. "Odd… You're usually so laidback." Zalair didn't move. "You've been pretty active since you spoke with Keigo again, huh?"

Still nothing.

Enmu walked over, sitting next to him. "Zalair… Did Corvus tell you anything?" He nodded. "What'd he say?"

"The spirits of the emerald and sapphire were sent by the goddesses," Zalair answered, turning a page. "Our souls were also sent by them to punish Efreet."

"Efreet?"

"He goes by Afrat here."

Enmu nodded, "I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that our spirits have been trying to punish him for a while?"

"Yeah," Zalair nodded. "Every time, he separates us and kills us off with torture of our minds and bodies."

Enmu rolled his eyes, "Doesn't that just sound wonderful?"

Zalair shrugged a bit. "Enmu."

"Hm?"

"Every time I see Keigo, I just get angry."

Enmu sighed, leaning back. "I'll be it's Afrat. He probably can manipulate us if he's come into contact with us."

Zalair looked to him, "He's still alive then?"

Enmu nodded gravely. "I'd bet my life on it."

A comfortable silence filled the library as the two said nothing for the next while. They were quiet even as they ate when food was brought to them.

Finally, Enmu looked to Zalair. Zalair was laying on the floor lazing about reading a book. He looked quite tired.

"You know… Love doesn't follow logic."

Zalair nodded, "Un… Head over heels in love- that kind of love is what you mean." He turned a bit over to look at the white-haired prince. "Right?"

Enmu nodded. "Maybe your love's like that."

"Love's rotten."

Enmu laughed, leaning over to Zalair. "What's that? Are you jealous that Keigo said he'd marry the Princess?"

Zalair closed his eyes, annoyed. "Not at all."

"Eh?" Enmu blinked, poking Zalair's cheek. "Then what're you still holding a grudge over?"

"Polygamists disgust me." Zalair answered very flatly. "They marry multiples and give their love about everywhere like a flower sheds its petals."

Enmu shifted a bit, "Yeah, but then, isn't that good? Sharing your love bounty like that- like a flower shares its beauty?"

"No." Zalair turned the page of his book. "It's not good for me. I want my partner to be with me and only me. None of this flaunting your love about."

Enmu chuckled, "What a selfish lover you'll be!"

"Eat snow!"
:giggle: Eat snow!
