Mei stared at Yao for a moment, “I don’t understand why.”

“What do you mean?”

“My mother was … very clear that no one would like them.”

Yao raised a brow, “Oh? Well she must’ve had her reasons for saying so.” He stopped stroking the wings, putting his hands into his lap. “Or else she wouldn’t have said it.” Mei nodded a bit. “What are you?”

“You mean… Am I human?”

“Yeah.” Yao nodded, shifting back to lean into the sofa.

Mei shrugged, looking at his wings, then over at Snowy in the box. “I guess, I’m some kind of angel. Maybe.”

“But you’re mortal aren’t you?”

“Yeah.” Mei nodded. “But, for some reason I have these wings. My mom’s are even bigger.”

“She didn’t tell you?”

“No.” Mei shook his head, “She just said don’t show your wings to anyone.”

Yao thought a few minutes, then stood up. “I’m going to the library. I want to see if I can find any books about it.”

“Yao!” Mei called to him.

“Hm?”

“Please… Don’t trouble yourself over it.” He asked, frowning.

Yao smiled back at him, “Don’t frown. I’m doing what I want. You should, too.”

Then he left without another word.

Mei looked down to Snowy, letting his wings fold back into invisibility in his back. “What I want to do?” He sighed, sliding onto the floor. “But I don’t want anything anymore.” He pushed his face into his knees, holding them close. “Not any more.”
