The machine followed Michael back to his apartment. After putting down his bag, the machine found his way to the balcony and looked down it to where Sao’s balcony was. Sao was sitting on it reading his book, not noticing he was being watched.

Marlia tapped Michael, “…What are you going to do with him if Sao won’t take him?”

Michael shook his head laughing, pulling out a blanket, “Sao’ll take him.”

“He will?”

“My brother’s the type that wants to make sure he wants something before he accepts it.”

“How do you mean,” Marlia asked, taking the blanket and watching as Michael went to get a pillow from the closet.

“One time,” Michael said back to her, “Sao came home with a puppy. His Momma didn’t want it and told him to get rid of it, but Sao argued with her that he wanted it. So, she let him keep it. The first week, Sao made the puppy sleep in my room. After that, Sao came and took the puppy all to himself.”

Marlia tilted her head, “You mean it’s like this? He’s not sure if he really wants 9-1-3?”

“Yeah.” Michael nodded, walking over to her. “He’ll come up in a bit probably to get him.”

“Are you sure?”

“No.” Michael took the blankets and walked to the sofa. “But… He’s not one to leave someone like this alone.”

“Huh?” Marlia followed Michael. “Someone like…this?”

Michael pointed to the machine, who was leaning against the railing staring at Sao below. “Who’s so focused on being with Sao. Sao had a girlfriend in high school because she followed him everywhere. He figured it’d be better if she went with him so he could make sure nothing bad happened to her rather than have her following him.”

After dinner, the machine was still watching Sao. He only came in once he saw Sao go inside. Marlia helped the machine get comfortable under the covers on the sofa and made sure he got a little something to eat.

Michael left in the morning for his classes, and Marlia left around noon to do some shopping. Bored, the machine played with some game cards he found in the cupboard. Then he messed with the television, watching everything from weather to news to history.

Marlia came back a couple hours later, and turned on the cooking show to learn what to cook for the week. Michael came back a bit after her and began to do his homework quietly.

The machine was going to ask them a question, when he noticed them getting all lovey-dovey and began to have groping sex in front of him. Totally embarrassed and knowing he shouldn’t be watching this, the machine hurried outside and began to pace around the staircase waiting to see Sao walking home.

Sao came home a bit later, noticing the machine with dark hair and red in the front dressed in all white waiting for him.

“I still don’t want you.” Sao said as he walked past the machine.

The machine ran after him, “That’s okay. You’ll want me around soon.”

“Confident.” Sao said, unlocking his door. “Where’d you get that?”

“Because… You… You wouldn’t have bought me if you don’t want me.”

Sao yanked open his door, glaring through his green shades at the other. “Go take a hike.” And with that, he went into his apartment and slammed the door shut.

Day after day, that was the routine. The machine would wait for Sao around the same time everyday and ask him to take him, and again and again Sao would tell him to go away.

“Leave me alone.” Slam goes the door.

“Go find someone else.” Slam.

“Bother my brother.” Slam.

“Don’t you have someone else to annoy?”

“Return yourself already.”

“I don’t have time.”

The machine waited on the weekend out on the stairs long after dark. He sighed heavily, sitting on them in the cold, “He’s late~” He stood up seeing Sao walking back. “Mister Hishi!” He gasped a bit and ran closer to him, seeing Sao with a red cheek. “You’re hurt!”

Sao looked at him but didn’t say anything and began his way to his apartment.

“Are you okay?” the machine asked, hurrying after him.

“Got into a fight with my boss.” Sao answered directly. “Got fired.” He began to unlock his door.

“You’ll find a better job!” the machine said with a smile and a nod.

Sao pulled open his door, looking to the machine. “Go back. You look cold.” And he went in and closed the door.

“Eh…?” The machine blinked. So far, Sao hadn’t paid any attention to the machine, who was still going around in his white outfit.

The next day, it was so cold it snowed and the machine waited out in it for Sao. Sao was out looking for a job and came back late to see the machine sitting on the stairs asleep with a small layer of snow forming on him.

“Idiot.” Sao said, walking over and picked up the machine into his arms.

Sao fussed a bit with his lock. Once inside, he carefully laid the machine into his bed and covered him up with his blankets. Sao turned on the heater full blast and relocked his door.

A bit later, Sao went to his door when he heard a knock to see Michael. “Did the machine come here? He was out waiting for you but he didn’t come back yet.”

“Yeah.” Sao nodded. “He fell asleep in the snow. He’s in my bed resting.”

Michael nodded, “Want his stuff?”

“Why?”

“…So he can get dressed tomorrow.”

Sao shrugged, “Sure.” He didn’t say anything out of pure shock of Michael being so psychic to already have the machine’s bag of stuff in his hands, and handed it.

“Take care of him, baby brother,” Michael smiled. “He seems to really like you.”

Sao didn’t say anything, watching as Michael waved and walked back out and up to his apartment. Sao locked the door and dropped the bag near the floor.

“Hmn…?” the machine came out of the bedroom almost two hours later. “Mister Hishi…?”

Sao looked up from his book in his spot on the sofa over to the hall where the machine was coming from. “Go back to sleep.”

“But… I took your bed.”

“So?”

“Don’t you need it?”

“Free day tomorrow.” Sao answered.

“Mister Hishi…?”

“What?”

“Can I stay?”
